‘The welfare state: a general theory’, now available free on open access

pspicker_welfstI have just posted links on my open access page to a fifth book, The Welfare State: a general theory.  It was published in 2000 by Sage, and they recently accepted my request that the rights should revert to me. I’ve adapted the electronic version to make it compatible with e-readers, for example dropping figures and tables, but I’ve posted a PDF version as well as EPUB and MOBI.

The book had a mixed reception when it came out.  It’s unconventional and a couple of reviewers complained that they’d much rather have had a real book instead. (We’re a conservative bunch in Social Policy.)   It’s the most innovative thing I’ve written to date, and there’s nothing else like it in the field.  I’d like to think it will still be worth reading  for a long time to come.
